BUFFALO, N.Y. - Jan. 18 - Erie Community College men's basketball head coach Alex Nwora will coach in his bare feet when the Kats, the nation's eighth-ranked team, play Monroe Community College Feb. 18 at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
Nwora, in his 13th season with the ECC program, is participating in the Samaritan's Feet "Barefoot for Bare Feet" program for the third time. Over $1,000 was raised at the 2011 ECC Barefoot for Bare Feet event.
The program intends to bring awareness for the plight of impoverished children who suffer needlessly from foot-borne diseases and infections due to the lack of shoes. According to Samaritan's Feet, approximately 300 million children wake each morning with shoes. IUPUI head coach Ron Hunter was the first NCAA Division I coach to participate in the program.
He was one of 25 college basketball coaches who participated in Samaritan's Feet's distribution of 1,000 pairs of shoes to Houston-area children at the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center during the 2011 NCAA Final Four.
Fans can donate shoes or money in the various donation bins in the Flickinger Center on game day.
All proceeds will benefit Samaritan's Feet.
