Kats Open WNYAC Season with Wins

ALFRED, N.Y. - Sept. 9 - The Erie Community College baseball team opened its 2012 Western New York Athletic Conference season with two wins Sunday afternoon against Alfred State. The Kats picked up a 15-1 win in the opener and added a 9-5 victory in the nightcap.

ECC scored six runs in the first inning highlighted by a grand slam from Zach Hayes (Orchard Park, N.Y./Bishop-Timon-St. Jude). ECC added five runs in the second inning, a run in the third and three more scores in the fourth.

Hayes finished with five runs batted in and two hits while Mike D'Eletto (Walworth, N.Y./Wayne Central) recorded three hits, drove in three runs and scored three times. Sophomore Brian Barry (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) struck out eight for the win.

In the nightcap, ECC scored three times in the third inning to take a 5-4 lead. Sophomore Vinny Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) had a two-out, two-run single. After Alfred State tied the game in the sixth inning, ECC erupted for four runs in the seventh. Sherman and Tyler Hoffhines (Depew, N.Y./Lancaster) each had RBI singles while David Wright (West Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) had a two-run single. Sophomore Cody Alessi (New Port Richey, Fla./East Lake) picked up the win in relief.

ECC's Saturday doubleheader against Monroe Community College was postponed due to rain. The Kats will now play the Tribunes Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the ECC North Campus diamond.
