ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Feb. 13 - Erie Community College freshman swimmer Brett Farrell (Derby/Lake Shore) won the 100-yard freestyle race at Sunday's Region III Swimming and Diving Championships at Monroe Community College. Farrell won the race with a time of 50.90 seconds.
In the team race, ECC finished fifth with 145 points on the women's side while the men's team was sixth with 149 points. Monroe Community College won both the men's and women's divisions.
ECC's Ryan Tomoporowski (West Seneca/West Seneca East) finished seventh in the event with a time of 56.06 seconds. ECC's team of Farrell, Tukie Gildo (Buffalo/East), Mike Mazurkiewicz (Cheektowaga) and Tomporowski was fifth in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:41.92. Ryan Walter was eighth in the 1,650 free at 20:52.
On the women's side, sophomore Rachelle Schmitt (Elma/Iroquois) was second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:47.52. Schmitt was also second in the 100 backstroke Saturday. Also for ECC, Raena Koeppel (Cheektowaga) was eighth in the 200 backstroke in 2:46.81. The 400 freestyle relay team of Caitlin Schwinge (Amherst/Sweet Home), Kathleen Savage, Koeppel and Schmitt was fifth with a time of 4:49.32. Schwinge was third in the 1,650 free in 20:35.
ECC is the host site for the NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships March 2-5 at the Flickinger Center.
