ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - (Sept. 25, 2012) – The Erie Community College football team (1-3, 0-2 NFC) plays Hudson Valley Community College (0-4, 0-3 NFC) at noon Saturday at Veterans Memorial Field in Troy, N.Y.
Conference/National Player of the Week: Dorian Polk (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) was named the NJCAA's Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 19) by the national office following his honor by the Northeast Football Conference Sept. 17.
ECC Last Week: The Kats saw No. 7 Nassau CC return three interceptions for touchdowns in the 27-7 loss at Jim Ball Stadium. Sophomore wide receiver Shayon Headley (Tampa, Fla./Lakewood) caught eight passes for 122 yards, setting career highs in both categories, to go with a 53-yard touchdown. Headley’s catches and receiving yardage both rank fourth in the ECC record book for a game.
Hudson Valley CC suffered a 41-6 loss at Dean College in NFC action.
ECC vs. HVCC in 2011: Jujuan Marshall caught a 23-yard touchdown pass and returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown as the Kats picked up a 27-20 win over Hudson Valley Community College at Jim Ball Stadium. Deonta Winston ran for 123 yards and a 50-yard touchdown. ECC forced five turnovers and Brian Doyle was in on 11 tackles (four solo/seven assists).
Series: The Kats have won six of the past eight meetings and now hold a 7-6 lead. Hudson Valley picked up a 9-7 win in 2010 in the last contest in Troy. The Vikings were the first team to beat ECC in Jim Ball Stadium, handing the Kats a 26-23 loss on Oct. 11, 2003, in ECC’s third season.
ECC Head Coach: The Kats are led by 12th-year head coach Dennis Greene. Greene has compiled a 58-56 record with the Kats and has guided the program to six Region III titles. Greene, the first Hudson Valley CC player rush for more than 1,000 yards, is a member of the Hudson Valley Athletics Hall of Fame.
ECC Leaders: Freshman running back Derick Peters (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) has run for 322 yards while classmate Jacob Wims (Rochester, N.Y./John Marshall) has run for 199. Headley has a team-high 12 receptions.
Dorian Polk has a team-high three interceptions. His three interceptions also lead the NFC. Linebackers Kyril Threats (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) and Brandon Cannon (Auburn, Ala./Auburn) have 28 and 27, respectively.
Scouting the Vikings: Tyrell Smith is the Vikings’ top rusher with 95 yards. Josh Gross and Sharmart Banks each have caught seven passes. Four quarterbacks have seen action for HVCC. Tarik Stringer and Malcolm Cater have 24 and 22 tackles, respectively.
Next Week: ECC returns to Jim Ball Stadium for its home finale against Lackawanna College. The Falcons have been ranked as high as 17th this season.
