CHEEKTOWAGA, NY - March 2 - For the second straight year the Erie Community College women's bowling team won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championships, defeating runner up Highland Community College by 385 pins. The Lady Kats finished with a pin total of 12,476. This marks the 29th NJCAA bowling championship for the Lady Kats and the fourth time in seven years that they've become national champions.
On the men's side, Vincennes University held off Schenectady Community College by 539 pins. The Kats finished in 10th place with a pin total of 11,700.
ECC women were led by all around women's champion Gabrielle Damin (Clarence, NY / Clarence) who totaled 2,310 pins over the two-day tournament, good for a 192.5 average. Liz Szpara (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) finished third overall for the women with a total pin count of 2,206, which averaged out to 184.6. Women's doubles were also won by ECC and the pair of Damin/Szpara who combined to roll 1,113 over six games.
For the men, they were led by Russell Wojciechowski who finished 28th.
