Wagner Leads Kats Past JCC in Opener

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - April 7 - Sophomore Mike Wagner (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Mary's) drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the fifth inning to lead the Erie Community College baseball team to a 6-5 lead and give the Kats a win over Jamestown Community College in game one of Saturday's Region III doubleheader at the ECC North Campus. The Kats recorded a 17-11 win in game two.

In the opener, Wagner had three hits in the game but his single between the first and second basemen into right field scored Vinny Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) gave the Kats the lead. Sherman singled with two outs to start the rally and moved to second base on a single by Adam Urschel (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) before Wagner's hit on a 0-1 pitch. Urschel, who scored twice, and Sherman each had two hits.

Sophomore T.J. Singh (Toronto, Ont./Holy Trinity) drove in four runs. He had a two-run single in the first inning and added another two-run single in the fourth.
 
Freshman Josh Vaccaro (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) picked up the win in relief, recording a strikeout with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.
 
Game two saw ECC score four in the first before erupting for 10 runs in the fourth. Ricky Mendiola (Wiliamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) had three hits and drove in three runs. Singh added three hits and drove in two more runs.

Freshman Joe Dileo (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Joseph's) threw 1.2 innings of relief for the win.

The Kats, now 15-9, play Finger Lakes CC in Region III action Tuesday in Canandaigua, N.Y.
