ECC Cheer Team to Compete at National Championships

Saturday, January 29, 2011

BUFFALO – (Jan. 27) - For the first time in program history, the Erie Community College cheerleading team will compete in the 2011 National Cheerleaders Association/National Dance Alliance Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships taking place April 6-10 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The event will be held at The Band Shell/Ocean Center/Peabody Auditorium.
To qualify, ECC had to submit a video based on its ability in five segments: stunts, tumbling, basket/sponge tosses, pyramids, and game-day segment. The 45-second game-day segment was shot during the 2010 ECC football season.
The Kats will be competing in the All Girl Division, which consists of schools in the NCAA Division III, NAIA and junior college/community college football divisions. The divisions are classified according to football programs (e.g. NCAA FBS, NCAA FCS, etc.)
“When I started this team 10 years ago, I never dreamed that this would happen. The girls are so excited,” said ECC head coach Le Anne Gerth. “This trip will be a great experience for our team as we will get to compete against the nation’s best.”
