Kats Open Season with Split

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - March 10 - In a matchup of 2011 NJCAA Division III World Series participants, the Erie Community College baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader against Rochester (Minn.) Community and Technical College. Rochester CTC won the opener 10-7 but the Kats, ranked fifth in the 2012 preseason polls, took game two 6-4. The teams met in the first round of the 2011 NJCAA World Series with ECC recording a 10-5 win.

In the second game, the Kats trailed 4-0 after four innings but later tied the game on an RBI single by freshman Nick Galenti(Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary’s) before sophomore Jesse Zellner (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) gave the Kats a 6-4 lead. Sophomore Mike Tolsma (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) allowed one earned run in 5 and 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out seven while freshman Joe Dilio (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Joseph’s) went 1 and 2/3 innings to pick up the win in relief.

The opener saw freshman Stephen Hubbs (Hamilton, Ont./Sir Winston Churchill) record two hits and drive in two runs. Sophomore Joe Christiano (Depew, N.Y./Saguaro) added two hits and a run scored while classmates Adam Grace (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) and Dylan Huch (Gowanda, N.Y./Gowanda) each had a pair of singles.

The Kats will play against the Ontario Terriers Sunday.
