Big First Half Powers Kats, Haynes Named All-Tournament

KIRTLAND, Ohio - Nov. 17 - The Erie Community College men's basketball team made eight three-point field goals in the first half and jumped out to a 54-32 lead Saturday afternoon at the TJ Memorial Classic at Lakeland CC. ECC needed those points as the Kats hung to to record a 94-91 win over Mercyhurst North East. The Kats are now 3-3.

ECC held a 94-86 lead with 16 seconds left after sophomore guard Shannon Haynes (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) sank two free throws. Mercyhurst North East closed the game with a layup and then three free throws for the final margin.

Haynes, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Kats with 29 points. Sophomore guard Isaiah Jefferson (Buffalo, N.Y./Riverside) added 19 points while freshman guard Keron Briggs (Buffalo, N.Y./Sweet Home) recorded 12 points and nine assists). Sophomore forward Demetrius Pauling (New York, N.Y./Martin Luther King) scored 12 points in a reserve role.

ECC will play at the Globe Institute of Technology Saturday.
