BUFFALO, N.Y. - Sept. 27 - The Erie Community College volleyball team took advantage of long scoring runs as the Kats recorded a 25-14, 25-15 and 25-11 win over Mercyhurst North East Thursday night at the Flickinger Center in Western New York Athletic Conference play.
The Kats, now 12-6 overall, used a nine-point scoring run to pull away to a 24-13 lead in the first set. Sophomore right-side hitter Katie Russi (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) gave the Kats the final two points of that run with ace serves. Russi had 10 service aces in the contest.
The second set saw ECC pull away to a 13-7 lead before winning eight of the next 10 points for a 21-9 lead. Russi again picked up two aces in the stretch.
The final set had ECC pick up a 9-3 lead before the Lakers rallied to 9-7. ECC responded with an eight-point run and the closed the match by scoring 10 of the final 14 points.
In addition to the 10 aces, Russi had a team-high 14 digs to go with eight kills. Sophomore Rylie Bean (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) had 16 kills in 27 attempts while recording 10 digs.
The Kats will play Saturday in a Region III pod tournament at Niagara County CC in Sanborn, N.Y.
