Sunday, May 22, 2011

Erie Community College alumnus Ryan Ciminelli repeated as champion of the George A. Obenauer Masters Tournament held recently at Strikers in West Seneca. Ciminelli becomes only the second bowler to repeat as champion. Ciminelli is currently ranked 26th in the PBA.
There were 107 participants in the 48th annual Obenauer tournament. Three members of ECC's national championship squad posted qualifying scores in the top 55. David Zajac (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) posted the 21st-best qualifying score of 1,559. Branden Simone (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) had the 42nd-highest qualifying score at 1,495 while Ted Chojecki (West Seneca, N.Y.) and his score of 1,476 was 54th.
Zajac was the lone member of the Kats to advance to match play. After losing his opening match, Zajac won his first contest in the once-defeated bracket before falling by 18 pins in the next round.
