WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - April 3 - The Erie Community College baseball team recorded a sweep in Sunday's doubleheader against Corning Community College at ECC North. The Kats improve to 9-9 overall with wins of 2-1 and 9-4.
The Kats won the opener in the seventh inning when freshman shortstop Joe Pantano (Fredonia, N.Y./St. Francis) walked with one out. Pantano stole second and advanced to third base on an error. After a pair of intentional walks, freshman Matt Creenan (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) recorded a hit to the center field wall to score Pantano with the winning run.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Alex Dannett (Brampton, Ont./BCSS) recorded the complete game victory as he allowed five hits and struck out seven. Corning's run was the first earned run allowed by Dannett in 25 innings.
In game two, sophomore Emilio Arteta (Miami, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop H.S.) hit a three-run home run in the first to give the Kats a 4-3 lead. ECC added four runs in the third inning as Jesse Zellner (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) and Creenan each drove in runs. Arteto added a solo homer in the fifth inning.
Sophomore Nick Cummings (Akron, N.Y./Akron) came in relief and pitched 3 and 2/3 scoreless innings for the win.
The Kats are scheduled to play Broome Community College Tuesday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at ECC North.
