BATAVIA, N.Y. - Oct. 20 - The Erie Community College volleyball team split its two matches at Saturday's Western New York Athletic Conference Tournament, held at Genesee CC. The Kats defeated Jamestown CC, 25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 11-25, 15-12 in the first round before falling 25-23, 25-17, 25-13 to top seed and eight-ranked Monroe CC.
Sophomore middle hitter Rylie Bean (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) led the Kats with 36 kills and she added 30 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Russi (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) led ECC with 33 digs. Sophomore libero Ashley Viengmay (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) added 16 digs and was named to the All-WNYAC Tournament team.
"When we passed well, we were able to get into our offense and run it quickly like we want to do," said ECC head coach Craig Starzynski.
ECC, now 20-9, will play Monroe CC, Jamestown CC and Herkimer County CC in three-set matches at the Region III Tournament at Niagara County CC in Sanborn, N.Y., Oct. 27. Action starts at 10 a.m. The top two teams from each division advances to the semifinals on Oct. 28.
