Freshman guard Mercedezes Ephraim hit all five of her three point attempts en route to 17 points to lead the Erie Community College women’s basketball team to a 76-61 win over Alfred State College in the opening round of the Region III Division II Tournament this evening in Buffalo.
With the win, fourth-seeded Erie (12-16) advances to face No. 1 Jamestown Community College in the semifinals at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 27 in Jamestown. The other semifinal game matches No. 2 Genesee Community College and No. 3 Mercyhurst North East.
The game was tight through much of the first 30 minutes. However Erie went on a 13-2 run that stretched a 47-5 lead to 60-47 with 6:20 remaining in the game. Alfred would not cut the margin to closer than seven points after that.
Sophomore forward Shavonne Garner had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Kats. Sophomore guard Alexandra Hart added 11 points and eight assists. Freshman forward Breanna Harris and sophomore forward Melissa Schultz had 14 and 11 rebounds, respectively.
Erie’s defense forced the Pioneers into 28 turnovers and held them to 26.7 percent (20-for-75) shooting from the floor.
Alfred State guard Brittany Brooks led all players with 29 points and 18 rebounds.
