Erie Community College cornerback Rashad Payne (Pompano Beach, Fla./Blanche Ely) has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play football next season at Bethune-Cookman. B-CU competes in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as NCAA Division I-AA.
Payne was a second-team All-Northeast Football Conference defensive back after starting all nine games in 2010. He led the Kats with three interceptions and seven pass breakups and averaged 10.4 yards per punt return. Payne finished third on ECC with 38 total tackles (31 solo/7 assists), including 3 tackles for loss of two yards. He returned punt 49 yards for touchdown against Lackawanna (Oct. 9) and was named conference special teams co-player of the week.
As a freshman, Payne was named the ECC athlete of the month for October. He led the Kats with six interceptions, returning two for touchdowns. He had a 100-yard interception for touchdown against Dean (Oct. 18, 2009) and a 32-yard effort against Milford Academy (Oct. 30. He finished the season with 32 total tackles (21 solo/11 assists).
Payne is the third member of the 2010 football team to sign. Destry Berry signed to play at New Mexico and Ellie Hyppolite signed to play at Florida A&M.
