ALFRED, N.Y. - Sept. 17 - The Erie Community College football team took advantage of five turnovers to record its first win of the 2011 season with a 23-21 win over Alfred State Saturday night at Pioneer Stadium in Region III play.
Holding a 16-14 lead, ECC sophomore quarterback Joe Daddario (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) completed a 10-yard pass to freshman running back Deonta Winston (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) for a touchdown on third down. The extra-point kick gave the Kats a 23-14 lead with 7:47 remaining.
After ECC took the 23-14 lead, the Kats forced Alfred State to punt. On the ensuing possession, the Kats were driving but committed a turnover at 2:51. Alfred State's Hampton threw his third touchdown pass of the game, hitting Simmons with a 21-yard scoring strike with 1:31 remaining.
ECC recovered the onside kick but was forced to punt with 1:01 remaining. ECC sophomore defensive back Pierre Blake (Temple Hills, Md./Potomac) intercepted a pass with 34 seconds left to end Alfred State’s comeback hopes.
An interception set up ECC’s first scoring drive. Following an interception by sophomore defensive back Chris Newkirk (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac), the Kats took a 7-0 lead when sophomore Brice Smith (Atlanta, Ga./Brookwood) scored on a one-yard run.
Alfred State tied the score on a pass on a fake field goal on a three-yard pass from Greg Hampton to Devin Simmons before ECC took its second lead of the game. Sophomore running back Nate Goldsmith (Buffalo, N.Y./Cleveland Hill) scored on a two-yard run to cap an 85-yard drive for a 13-7 lead. The Kats missed the extra-point attempt.
On its first possession of the second half, ECC drove downfield and freshman placekicker/punter Nate Benoit (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) kicked a 41-yard field goal for a 16-7 lead.
Alfred State's Hampton completed a 19-yard scoring pass to Tavon Moore to bring the Pioneers within two, 16-14, with 13:27 left.
Freshman wide receiver Zak Echols (Rockey River, Ohio/Rockey River) made six receptions for 112 yards as Daddario completed 14 of 22 passes for 172 yards.
ECC plays at Nassau Community College in Garden City, N.Y., Sept. 24 in Northeast Football Conference play.
