Western York Construction Trades, in cooperation with Erie Community College, sponsored Construction Career Days, a two-day, hands-on workshop for high school students, September 29 and 30, 2010 at the Operating Engineers Training Facility, 2342 Pleasant Ave., Lakeview, NY.
Nearly 1,000 students from school districts around Western New York participated in this event, which is designed to allow students in grades 11-12 explore the various careers available in the construction industry.
Students were able to talk with representatives from local and regional contractors and construction-related businesses, as well representatives from ECC.
Along with the informational booths, students took part in hands-on activities such as mixing mortar, finishing concrete, laying block and welding. Participants also had the chance to operate heavy equipment under the skilled guidance of a trained operator.
The event was sponsored by the Western New York Building Trades, Federal Highway Administration, Construction Industry Employers Association, New York State Department of Transportation, Rural Metro Medical Services and Erie Community College.
