ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (Sept 11, 2012) – The Erie Community College football team plays its second home game this season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Alfred State College at Jim Ball Stadium.  ECC celebrates Kids Day and homecoming at this nonconference contest.
ECC enters the game 0-2 while Alfred State opened its season this past Sunday with a 27-3 win over Hartwick JV.
For the second-straight season, ECC’s home games can be viewed online. Visit http://www.ecc.edu/athletics/streaming.aspx to view the games.
The Kats are coming off a 17-7 loss to Louisburg (N.C.) College Sept. 1, in Northeast Football Conference action.  ECC freshman kicker Tyler Blackburn (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) tied the school record with a 52-yard field goal while freshman linebacker Brandon Cannon (Auburn, Ala./Auburn) made 13 tackles to record the second most in a game by a Kat. ECC recorded two safeties in the contest but were doomed by four interceptions and a lost fumble.
Homecoming/Kids Day: There will be face painting, a bounce house and other family fun activities. Alumni attending the game are encouraged to stop at a tent to check in. Food and refreshments will be available. Gates open at noon.
Kats to Watch: Following his 13-tackle performance, Cannon ranks second in the Northeast Football Conference in tackles, averaging 9.5 per game. Linebacker Kyril Threats (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) is eighth, averaging 7.0 stops.
Running back Derick Peters (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) ran for 96 yards against Louisburg and leads the squad with 156 yards. Head Coach: The Kats are led by 12th-year head coach Dennis Greene. Greene has compiled a 57-55 record with the Kats and has guided the program to six Region III titles.
Against Alfred State: The Kats and Pioneers have met at least once each season since ECC started football in 2001. The Kats lead the series, 12-3, after Alfred State snapped a two-game win streak with a 26-20 win in the 2011 Region III Championship game at Jim Ball Stadium.
ECC won the first matchup, 74-7, and was victorious in the first six games. After Alfred State won the second meeting of the 2005 season, ECC won four straight contests. ASC snapped that streak when the Pioneers won 2009’s second meeting.
The Kats’ losses in the series have come on the second time the teams played that season.
Last Meeting: Alfred State scored 26-straight points and took advantage of four Erie CC interceptions as the Pioneers recorded a 26-20 win over ECC, Nov. 12, 2011.
The Kats were led by running back J.J. Dickey's 116 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Dickey capped the game's opening drive with a five-yard run. After ASC’s 26-straight points, Dickey scored on a 32-yard run and then set up ECC’s third touchdown with a 30-yard run. The Kats marched 33 yards on their final possession but were unable to score.
Scouting Alfred State: The Pioneers got touchdowns from their offensive, defensive and special teams units in the win over Hartwick JV. Alfred State returned a punt 89 yards for a touchdown and returned an interception 31 yards for another TD.
