LEWISTON, N.Y. (Oct. 31) - Erie Community College sophomore forward Ryan Vertino (Grand Island/Grand Island H.S.) recorded two goals and two assists but the Kats' hockey team suffered a 6-5 overtime loss to the Niagara University ACHA team Sunday night at Dwyer Arena.
ECC trailed 3-2 in the third period before freshman forward Justin Banaszak (Lancaster, N.Y.) scored a power-play goal at 6:03. At 7:59, sophomore forward Todd Lyness (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) gave the Kats a 4-3 lead. Vertino then gave the Kats a 5-3 lead at 10:16.
The Kats were whistled for an interference penalty and Niagara scored nine seconds later to cut the Kats' lead to one, 5-4. Niagara tied the game at 16:14. After ECC was called for interference with 22 seconds remaining, Vertino had a chance to win the game in regulation but his shot went wide.
In the extra period, ECC was still shorthanded. Vertino intercepted a pass and had a breakaway attempt but his shot was kicked aside. Sixty-four seconds into the overtime, Niagara's Joe Baldinelli scored the game-winning goal.
ECC, now 1-1, plays Broome Community College Saturday at 3:15 p.m. in Cheektowaga.
