WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - April 4 - The Erie Community College baseball team scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings as the Kats recorded a 3-2 win over Alfred State College Thursday afternoon in the opener of the Region III doubleheader at the ECC North Campus. The Kats used seven-run sixth inning to pick up an 11-2 win in the nightcap to sweep the Pioneers and improve to 11-10 overall.
After Alfred State took a 2-1 lead, sophomore outfielder Nick Manoukarakis (Toronto, Ont./Birchmount Park) drove in sophomore Brian Barry (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Barry reached on an error to open the inning. He moved to third on a passed ball before scoring on Manoukarakis' sacrifice fly. In the seventh, sophomore outfielder Austin Zakroczemski (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Francis) singled to center to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Zakroczemski stole third base and scored on an ASC error. Freshman Mike Schnurr (Waterloo, Ont./St. David's) won his third game of the season as he allowed four hits and struck out four.
Manoukarakis and sophomore infielder Trent Unverdorben (Portville, N.Y./Portville) each singled and doubled as they combined to drive in seven runs. Manoukarakis had a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning while Unverdorben's third-inning double scored two to give the Kats a 3-2 lead. Sophomore outfielder Vinny Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) and freshman infielder Kyle Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) each added two hits to back Barry's five-hit pitching performance.
The Kats will play Tompkins Cortland CC in a home-and-home doubleheader. The teams will play in Dryden Saturday before having two games in Williamsville Sunday at 1 p.m.
