DRYDEN, N.Y. - April 6 - Sophomore pitcher Ian Walsh (Wayne, N.Y./Wayne) threw a one-hitter and struck out 13 batters as the Erie Community College baseball team recorded an 11-1 win in six innings over Tompkins Cortland CC Saturday afternoon in Region III action. Walsh hit the first batter he faced and then allowed a single before retiring 18-straight hitters. ECC used a five- and a nine-run inning in the nightcap to pick up the sweep with a 16-2 decision. ECC has now won four-straight games and is 13-10 overall.
ECC sophomore Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) had three hits, including a two-run single in the first inning. Sophomore Vinny Sherman (North Collins, North Collins) had two doubles and drove in four runs. Sophomore outfielder Nick Manoukarakis (Toronto, Ont./Birchmount Park) added a two-run homer in the sixth. Sherman, Michael D'Eletto (Wayne, N.Y./Wayne) and Brian Barry (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) each had two hits in the contest. Mendiola, Manoukarakis and D'Eletto each drove in two runs.
Barry led the Kats in the nightcap with three hits and four RBI. Nick Caboot (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore), Jake Weiser (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier), Brett Bauth (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary's), D'Eletto, and Sherman each had two hits. Bauth drove in three runs while D'Eletto, Sherman and Mendiola each drove in two.
The two teams continue the home-and-home doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. at the ECC North Campus.
