EAST PEORIA, Ill. - Louisburg (N.C.) College used a 13-1 run early in the first half and then a 14-3 run to close the half as the Hurricanes handed the Erie Community College women's basketball team a 66-49 loss in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II National Championship Tuesday at the CougarPlex on the campus of Illinois Central College.
Sophomore forward Alexis Gray (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca) led the Kats with 17 points and eight rebounds while sophomore forward Charmaine Weaver (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) added 11 rebounds to go with eight points, four steals and two blocked shots. ECC committed 32 turnovers in the loss.
Louisburg, now 29-3, had four players score 11-or-more points. Justin Taylor led the Hurricanes with 15 points while Courtney Raiford, Latrice Phelps and Tiffany Johnson each added 11 points.
ECC, 21-6, will play Owens (Ohio) CC at 10 a.m. Thursday in the consolation bracket. Owens suffered a 76-68 overtime loss to the CC of Rhode Island.
