BUFFALO, N.Y. - Oct. 18 - The seventh-ranked Erie Community College volleyball team recorded a 27-25, 25-13, 25-20 win over Alfred State Tuesday night in Western New York Athletic Conference play at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
The Kats, now 24-2, were led by Katie Russi (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) with 14 kills. Rylie Bean (Hamburg,
N.Y./Frontier) added four blocks and Danielle Aurellio-Clark had 29 assists. As a team, ECC had 13 blocks.
"We were trying to focus on blocking in practice and it came through today," said ECC head coach Craig Starzynski. "Once you take away their middle, you have a good chance to beat them and it showed tonight. When we served tough, we dominated the match."
The Pioneers fall to 21-14.
In game one, the teams traded runs early but the Kats stayed alive, tying the set 25-25. Susan Muldoon (Buffalo/Mt. Mercy Academy) then served an ace before Aurellio-Clark and Bean combined on a block for the winning point.
The Kats got five kills from Muldoon and Russi in the 25-13 second set victory. ECC had runs of 8-1 and 6-2 to pull away to a 17-6 lead.
In the third, Russi again had five kills, including the clinching point. ECC opened with a 6-1 run behind two Muldoon kills.
ECC will serve as the host school for Saturday's WNYAC Tournament. Action starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Flickinger Center. Seeds are still to be determined.
