CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - Jan. 26 - Sophomore forward Joshua Jaszcz (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) broke a 5-5 tie when he scored on a deflection with 3:52 remaining as the fourth-ranked Erie Community College hockey team picked up a 6-5 win over third-ranked Hudson Valley CC Saturday afternoon at the Cheektowaga Rec Center.
Jaszcz gave ECC a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal before freshman forward Matt Shumate (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) gave the Kats a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal of his own in the first period. ECC extended the lead to 4-0 after goals by freshman forward Matt Malley (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and freshman defenseman Cody Dynarski (West Seneca, N.Y.).
William Huber, the leading scorer in Region III, put Hudson Valley CC on the board with just under three minutes remaining in the second period. Sophomore forward Jeff Szewczyk (West Seneca, N.Y.) scored on a power-play goal 59 seconds into the third period for a 5-1 ECC lead. Hudson Valley CC pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker to score its second goal of the game before adding three goals in three minutes to tie the contest, 5-5, with five minutes left.
Shumate, who finished the game with four assists, fired the puck in front of the net from the right side and Jaszcz tapped in the game-winner. Jaszcz also recorded two assists as did sophomore defenseman Ryan Kaufman (Amherst, N.Y.). ECC's Nic Pagano (Holland, N.Y.) picked up the win in net.
The Kats, now 11-6, are scheduled to play Mohawk Valley CC at 3:20 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Cheektowaga Rec Center.
