Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Freshman Megan Marciniak hit two home runs and drove in eight runs to lead the Erie Community College (10-12/6-8 Region III) softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Onondaga Community College Tuesday afternoon on Santo DeSain Field in Williamsville.

Erie trailed 8-5 with two outs before Marciniak’s grand slam home run put the Kats ahead. Onondaga tied the game at 9-9 in the top of the sixth but Erie plated two runs in the bottom of the inning off an error and a wild pitch for the win.

Freshman Courtney Bonivissuto was two-for-three with two stolen bases and three runs scored in the game. Marciniak had two hits and five RBI and freshman Heather Belson was three-for-four. Freshman Krista Longo added two hits and an RBI.

Onondaga took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap before Marciniak’s two-run blast in the bottom of the inning cut the Kats’ deficit to 3-2. Erie would break open the game with nine runs on six hits in the third inning.

Freshman shortstop Alyssa Taborn had two doubles and three RBI in the game for Erie. Belson and Bonivissuto were each two-for-three.

Freshman pitcher Kara Edwards allowed seven hits and three unearned runs in five innings of work to earn the win. She struck out four and walked two.

Erie has now won 10 straight games and will host Niagara County Community College at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 29.
