The Erie Community College (20-4)
ice hockey team won two games over Hudson Community College this past weekend
to earn its second straight Region III Championship. The Kats won 5-3 Saturday
and 5-0 Sunday and finished the season with a 10-2 regional mark.
Erie took a 3-1 lead into the
third period of Saturday’s game, but Hudson Valley responded with a pair of
goals in the first three minutes to tie the contest. Freshman defenseman
Michael Pratt’s goal put the Kats back on top with 9:45 remaining in the game
and then Erie got an empty net goal from Phil DiFrancisco with 22 seconds
remaining to secure the win.
Freshman Steven Milley, sophomore
Tom Smith and freshman Andrew Yelich also
scored in the game.
Milley scored a pair of goals to
lead Erie in Sunday’s win. DiFrancisco, Ryan Vertino and Tom Leone also netted
goals for the Kats. Sophomore netminder Bryan Kalczynski picked up the shutout
in net for the Kats.
Erie has received the No. 2 seed
in the four-team NJCAA tournament that will be hosted March 6-7 at Hudson
Valley Community College in Troy. Erie will meet third-seeded Monroe in the
second semifinal game at 6:30 p.m., March 6. The first semifinal game will
match top-seeded Dakota College and No. 4 Hudson Valley.
