BUFFALO, N.Y. - Nov. 3 - Delaware Technical CC's Joe McLain hit a jump shot as the buzzer sounded to lift the Spirit to a 78-76 win over the Erie Community College men's basketball team Saturday afternoon in the Coles/Brennan's Tournamentat the Flickinger Center. Delaware Tech will play Genesee CC, which defeated Niagara County CC 82-77, in Sunday's championship game. Erie CC will play NCCC at noon with the championship game to follow.
ECC (0-1) was led by freshman guard Keron Briggs (Buffalo, N.Y./Sweet Home) with 17 points and two steals. The Kats trailed by seven, 64-57 with 10:30 left before mounting their comeback. ECC took a 71-70 lead after Isaiah Jefferson (Buffalo, N.Y./Riverside) sank two foul shots with 4:45 remaining. The Kats held a 76-74 lead after sophomore forward Emanuel Hutcherson (Milton, Mass./Milton) sank two free throws with 1:39 to play. Delaware Tech's Juwan Mullen made two free throws with 25 seconds left to tie score. ECC then turned the ball over with 2.8 seconds remaining, setting up McLain's game-winning play.
Sophomore Shannon Haynes (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) added 14 points while sophomore guard Darale Young (Buffalo, N.Y./Middle College) and sophomore foward Eyimofee Edukugho (Warri, Nigeria/Our Savior New American) each netted 10 points.
Mullen led Delaware Tech with 22 points.
Genesee CC 82, NCCC 77
Genesee CC built a 20-point lead in the first half and the Cougars held on to record the win over NCCC. Edward Blackwell and Vaughn Boler led GCC with 18 points each. Terryl Coombs came off the bench to add 14 points while Malik Brown added 13 points.
NCCC's Jon Marsh led the Thunderwolves with 16 points and six assists.
