To help ensure students get the vaccinations that are required for college, Erie Community College has partnered with Sheehan Health Network to provide the MMR vaccine to ECC students who need one, ECC President Jack Quinn announced Thursday.
Students will be charged a sliding scale fee based on income.
Sheehan Health Network is located only blocks from ECC’s City Campus at 425 Michigan Ave., Buffalo.
New York State Public Health Law 2165 requires that students born after 1956 that are taking six or more credit hours provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella. According to the law, a student will be withdrawn from the college if proof of immunity is not provided within 30 days of the start of classes.
In addition, students, regardless of birth date, are required to sign a statement that they have received and read information about meningococcal meningitis. The meningococcal meningitis immunization, while highly recommended, is optional.
Effective starting in the spring 2011 semester, students have already begun taking advantage of this opportunity, ECC Executive Vice President for Student Affairs Monica Rascoe said.
“I am very pleased to be able to work with Sheehan Health Network to provide these important immunizations to our students. Sheehan has been an excellent partner, especially at our City Campus, and I look forward to continuing our strong partnership,” Quinn said.
“As a hospital located in downtown Buffalo, Sheehan is positioned to offer an array of medical services to a growing diverse market,” stated Mary H. Kargbo, CEO for Sheehan Health Network. “We are glad to be able to provide the students with their immunization needs in addition to an opportunity to connect with their own primary physician if needed.”
