DANVILLE, Ill. - March 24 – Freshman forward Eyimofee Edukugho (Warri, Nigeria/Our Savior New American School) scored with 1.8 seconds left to lift the Erie Community College men’s basketball team to a 63-62 win Saturday afternoon over Danville Area Community College in the seventh-place game at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament the Mary Miller Gymnasium at DACC. The Kats finish the season 27-5.
Danville CC’s inbounds pass flew the length of the court untouched for a turnover. ECC inbounded the ball into the backcourt and time expired.
Danville CC took a 62-61 lead with 19.9 seconds left on an offensive putback by Shea Sumpter Prior to Edukugho’s game-winning basket, ECC’s last basket came when sophomore forward Yandell Denis scored at 4:49 on a putback to give the Kats a 61-57 lead.
Sophomore guard Haruna Sule (Kano, Nigeria/Ahmadiyya) led the Kats with 12 points while sophomore forward Dequan Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y./Pacific) added 11. Sophomore forward Anthony Mason (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bedford Academy) snared nine rebounds.
The Kats trailed 37-33 at halftime and 44-36 early in the second half before going on a 12-2 run to take a 48-46 lead when Jones completed a conventional three-point play at 13:07. ECC pushed the lead to four, 55-51, when Jones sank a three-point field goal just over two minutes later. With ECC holding a 61-59 lead, the teams traded misses until Sumpter sank one of two foul shots with 52.2 seconds left.
Sumpter led DACC, which finished 21-15, with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
