BUFFALO, N.Y. - Feb. 2 - The Erie Community College men's basketball team used a 10-1 run to close the first half and the 14th-ranked Kats never looked back Saturday afternoon, recording a 92-81 win over fifth-ranked Monroe CC at the Flickinger Center. The win extends ECC's win streak to 15 games and has the Kats 8-0 in Western New York Athletic Conference play. Monroe CC is now 20-3 overall and 7-1 in league play.
Five different Kats scored in the first half's final 4:03 as they broke away from a 32-32 tie to take a 42-33 halftime lead.
ECC sophomore forward Rayshawn Sumlin (Cleveland, Ohio/Martin Luther King) recorded his fourth double-double of the season and third in the last six games as he scored 19 points, snared 16 rebounds and made five steals. Sumlin had 11 points and 10 rebounds in the first half.
ECC freshman guard Keron Briggs (Buffalo, N.Y./Sweet Home) scored a game-high 25 points while sophomore guard Isaiah Jefferson (Buffalo, N.Y./Riverside) added 18 points. Sophomore guard Devon Elliott (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) scored 16 points and sophomore forward Emanuel Hutcherson (Milton, Mass./Milton) added 10 rebounds.
Monroe CC was led by Tashawn Desir's 22 points.
The Kats will play Niagara County CC at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sanborn, N.Y.
