Kats Win Two in Opening Weekend

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Erie Community College baseball team split its first four games of the 2011 season. The Kats have won the past two games and will play seven more this week.

ECC 17, Oakton CC 5

March 13 - The Kats trailed 5-0 after three innings of play Sunday against Oakton (Ill.) Community College but Kats responded by scoring 17 unanswered runs - one in the fourth, seven in the fifth, fifth in the seventh and four in the ninth innings - to record a 17-5 win and improve to 2-2 on the season.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Alex Dannett (Brampton, Ont./BCSS) picked up the win by tossing four scoreless innings and striking out nine.

Freshman Dom Beniamino (Geneva, N.Y./Midlakes) had three hits and scored two runs. Sophomore Neal Demartin (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) had two hits and drove in three runs. Joe Pantano (Fredonia, N.Y./St. Francis) and Mike Wagner (Clarence, N.Y./St. Mary's) each recorded two hits and scored twice.

Freshman Cory Bukowski (Depew, N.Y./Depew) delivered a two-run pinch-hit home run, the Kats' first round-tripper of the season, in the ninth.

ECC 0-5, Rochester CTC 3-4

March 12 - Freshman Mike Wagner (Clarence, N.Y./St. Mary's) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Kats to a 5-4 win over Rochester (Minn.) Community and Technical College Saturday. Wagner also picked up the win in relief as ECC improved to 1-2.

Bo Aquila (Alden, N.Y./Alden), who drove in Wagner, finished the day with two runs batted in. Mike Tolsma (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) struck out four batters and allowed two earned runs in six innings pitched.

In the opener, ECC lost 3-0. Nick Cummings (Akron, N.Y./Akron) struck out six in five innings pitched. ECC only had four hits in game one.

Century 21, ECC 6

March 11 - ECC suffered a 21-6 loss Friday to Century (Minn.) College as the Kats opened the 2011 season. Freshman shortstop Joe Pantano (Fredonia, N.Y./St. Francis) went 2-3 and drove in two runs. Sophomore first baseman Travis Denman (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) and sophomore outfielder Kyle O'Brien (Ottawa, Ont./All Saints Catholic) each drove in two runs. Dom Beniamino (Geneva, N.Y./Midlakes) had two hits, including a double.
