BUFFALO, N.Y. – (Feb. 3) – The Erie Community College women’s lacrosse team has been ranked eighth in the nation in the preseason poll by Lacrosse Magazine.
The Kats’ first-year head coach Jim Battin said the ranking is a combination of the 10-5 record posted in 2010 and a number of key players returning.
“The recognition is a great honor and sets the tone for the up-coming season,” he said. “Last season, we might have caught a few teams off-guard, but this season, teams will be ready for us. They now know that we are coming to play and to play hard. The ranking emphasizes that fact and it’s a great reflection of the work and dedication that the coaches, players, and athletics department put forward.”
The ECC Kats will be relying heavily on the play of returnees such as Jennifer Buchnowski (Iroquois/Elma), Sarah Kirchberger (West Seneca/West Seneca West), Kelsey McKeown (Angola/Lake Shore), and Anastasia Zarbo (West Seneca/West Seneca West).
Kirchberger led the team with 53 goals last season while McKeown added 36.
“Last year’s team helped set the tone for the program and we have picked up on last year’s dedication, which can be seen in the effort they are putting forth in practice,” said Battin. “We all are greatly looking forward to this season and to compete strongly with some of the best teams in the nation.”
ECC will play Cayuga Community College March 30. The Kats open their home schedule April 9 against Onondaga CC, the nation’s second-ranked team in the preseason poll.
