Mukumbira records hat trick

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (Sept. 9, 2010) – The Erie Community College men’s soccer team (3-0) remained unbeaten Thursday, defeating previously-unbeaten Genesee Community College (2-1), 5-3, at the ECC South Campus.

The last time ECC won three consecutive matches was in 2008 when the Kats defeated Cayuga Community, 5-2, Oct. 6; Niagara County Community College, 2-0, Oct. 9; and Mercyhurst North East, 2-1 in overtime, Oct. 11. ECC last won three matches to open the season in 2006.

Against the Cougars, the Kats trailed 2-0 before scoring three-straight goals to take a 3-2 lead at halftime.

Sophomore Jon Sikorski (Frontier) broke through in the 33rd minute on a pass from freshman Adan Mukumbira (Grover Cleveland). Four minutes later, Sikorski hit Mukumbira with a perfectly timed pass into the box that Mukumbira put into the corner of the net. Mukumbira added his second goal after Trevor Vanderbush (Holland) worked the ball to the right side of the box and found Mukumbira cutting on goal to give ECC the lead.

With GCC playing down one man due to a red card (unsportsmanlike conduct), rookie Pablo Ordonez (Cheektowaga) took a crossing pass from sophomore Erik Greiner (Frontier) and drove the ball past the GCC goalkeeper seven minutes into the second half. In the 82nd minute, Mukumbira completed the hat trick on a pass by classmate Omar Sundi (Grover Cleveland).

“I was proud of our team for never letting up, even after being down two goals early,” ECC head coach Bernie Feldmann said. “The game was like a heavyweight prize fight, slugging it out right to the end. One team would attack for a period of time while the other weathered the storm and then would counter. That GCC squad is a very talented group. Today, we just got one more break than they did.”

Sophomore Craig Raines (Gloucester, Va.) made 11 saves, including a diving stop to keep the match tied at two.

The Kats return to action Saturday at the ECC South Campus Field as they host Fulton Montgomery Community College at 2 p.m.
