Glenn Scott, a military veteran and current student at City Campus, was awarded first place in a creative arts competition sponsored by the VA Western New York Healthcare System on February 16, 2012 at the Buffalo VA Medical Center. With the win, one of Scott's three entered art pieces won admission to the National Veterans Creative Arts Competition, scheduled to take place on October 14th, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts.
The local event was held in conjunction with National Salute to Veteran Patients Week, held annually across the country. His artwork, along with that of the other participants, will be on display at the Buffalo VA Medical Center for a public art show on August 16, 2012.
Across the country each year, veterans treated at VA facilities compete in a local creative arts competition as part of the National Veterans' larger event. The competition includes 53 categories in the visual arts division this year that range from oil painting to leatherwork to paint-by-number kits. In addition, there are 120 categories in the performing arts pertaining to all aspects of music, dance, drama and creative writing. A national selection committee chooses first, second and third place winners among all of the entries. Select winners are invited to attend the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival each year.
The key purpose of the National Veterans Creative Arts competition and Festival is to recognize veterans for their creative accomplishments and to educate and demonstrate to communities throughout the country the therapeutic benefits of the arts.
