Kats Sweep Hudson Valley CC, Advance to Region III Semifinals

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - May 11 - Sophomore Brian Barry (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) led the Erie Community College baseball team to wins of 7-3 and 13-3 over Hudson Valley CC Saturday in the opening round of the Region III Tournament. Barry homered in each game and scattered six hits to pick up the win in the nightcap. ECC advances to the Region III Tournament semifinals this coming weekend in Little Falls, N.Y. ECC's opponent is yet to be determined.

Barry hit a solo home run and added a two-run double in the seventh as the Kats picked up a 7-3 win in the opener. After Barry's fifth-inning homer, sophomore Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) doubled and scored on a double by Nick Manoukarakis (Toronto, Ont./Birchmount Park). Tyler Hoffhines (Depew, N.Y./Lancaster) singled to drive in Manoukarakis.

Hudson Valley CC added a run in the sixth before the Kats plated two runs in their half of the inning. Following a double by Marc Dileo (Williamsville, N.Y./Canisius), Nick Caboot (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) singled to drive in Dileo. Vinny Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) then doubled to drive in Caboot for a 5-2 ECC lead.

Freshman Michael Schnurr (Waterloo, Ont./St. David's) improved to 8-0 by scattering nine hits.

In the nightcap. Mendiola hit a two-homer in the first while Barry added a two-run shot in the third. Mendiola would pick up a two-run single in the fifth as ECC erupted for nine runs. Mendiola, Sherman, and Austin Zackroczemski (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Francis) each had two hits. Barry, who set ECC's single-season mark for totals bases at 126, leads NJCAA Division III with 21 doubles and 69 runs batted in.

The Kats' 37 wins are tied for the second most in school history. ECC also won 37 games in 2000. It won 39 games in 2005.
