BUFFALO, N.Y. (Sept. 28) - The Erie Community College volleyball team ran its win streak to 10 matches with a 23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-16 victory over Mercyhurst North East Tuesday night at the Flickinger Center. ECC improves to 14-8 while Mercyhurst North East falls to 7-14.
Sophomore outside hitter Alex DiGiore (Hamburg/Frontier H.S.) led the way with 17 kills while classmate Katie Boxler (Attica/Attica H.S.) added 14 kills. Freshman Julia Gangloff (Lancaster/Lancaster H.S.) recorded 36 assists and 17 digs. Freshman Molly Gasuik (Buffalo/Mt. Mercy Academy) had 13 digs and two aces.
"That was a good match. Katie focused on hitting and Julia focused on setting and they played as good as I've seen them play all year," ECC head coach Craig Starzynski said. "And Molly has really stepped up and played very well defensively, especially the last week."
After rallying to a take a 23-20 lead in set one, the Kats saw Mercyhurst scored the set's final five points for the win. Behind the service game of Nicole Kreuzer (Angola/Lake Shore H.S.), ECC opened a 10-3 lead in game two. Mercyhurst made a couple of runs to make it 21-19 before DiGiore and Boxler combined for four kills and the 25-19 win.
The Kats opened a 12-6 lead in game three but saw Mercyhurst come within three, 19-16. DiGiore and Boxler each had a kill as ECC scored six of the set's final seven points. DiGiore had three kills early as the Kats took a 9-7 lead in the fourth set. ECC used a five-point run, fueled by two Gasuik aces, to build a 23-14 lead and cruise to the win.
ECC is back in action Saturday at Tompkins-Cortland Community College's Panther Invitational.
