DANVILLE, Ill. - March 23 - Sophomore guards Dequan Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y./Pacific) and Brandon Emmitt (Akron, Ohio/Garfield) each scored 17 points to lead the Erie Community College men's basketball team to an 80-69 win over Moraine Valley (Ill.) Community College Friday afternoon in the consolation round of the NJCAA Division II Tournament. The Kats trailed 10-0 three minutes into the game held at the Danville Area Community College's Mary Miller Gymnasium.
ECC, now 26-5, will play at 1 p.m. Saturday against Danville CC for seventh place.
With ECC holding a 68-64 lead, Emmitt sank a three-point field goal with 2:43 left for a 71-64 lead. He then made the first of two foul shots with 1:36 remaining before snaring the rebound of the second free throw. Jones was fouled later in that possession and gave ECC a 75-67 lead with 1:29 remaining after making two free throws. Jones then stole a pass to set up a dunk by sophomore forward Uche Ogbonna (Westbury, N.Y./Hicksville) that gave ECC a 77-67 lead.
Freshman forward Eyimofee Edukugho (Warri, Nigeria/Our Savior New American School) added 13 points. He and Jones each grabbed seven rebounds.
ECC trailed 10-0 after the game's first three minutes. Freshman guard Shannon Haynes (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) gave ECC a 14-13 lead after making two free throws with 12:11 to play. Haynes added two foul shots with 44.8 seconds remaining to give the Kats a 44-31 lead. ECC led 46-31 at halftime.
