ECC Volleyball Opens Tournament with Two Wins

Saturday, September 25, 2010

HOLYOKE, Mass. (Sept. 24, 2010) - The Erie Community College volleyball team recorded two wins Friday night in pool play at the Holyoke (Mass.) Community College tournament.

The Kats, now winners of three straight to improve to 7-8 overall, defeated Word of Life, 18-25, 25-22, 15-6, before recording a 25-8, 25-20 win over Holyoke.

Sophomore outside hitter Alex DiGiore (Hamburg/Frontier) had 12 kills against Holyoke and six against Word of Life.

"We started off pretty slow and Word of Life really came to play," ECC head coach Craig Starzynski said. "They were scrappy and covered the floor really well. But, we pulled it together and took the next two by being disciplined and playing under control."

"We eliminated a lot of the mistakes we have a habit of making (against Holyoke)," Starzynski continued. "We served well and hit considerably better than the past few matches. We finished with 28 kills and only three hitting errors -- that was the real difference."

Julia Gangloff (Lancaster/Lancaster) had 23 assists in the two games, 18 coming against Holyoke.

The Kats continue with pool play Saturday and Sunday.
