BUFFALO, NY - The Erie Community College Kats dropped their fifth straight game as they lost to Dean College 35-7 at Jim Ball Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Defensively, things started off well for the Kats as they held the Bulldogs to a field goal attempt after they entered the red zone on their first drive. The Kats would block the attempt and keep the game scoreless. The Kats would then surrender back to back scores on the Bulldogs' next two possessions to fall into a 14-0 hole in the first quarter.
It was tough for the Kats to have prolonged drives for most of the first half mainly due to tough Bulldog defense. Drives would stall and force the Kats to punt preventing any early scoring opportunities.
After another Bulldog score on a one-yard run by Adriell Mayes to put the Bulldogs up 21-0, the Kats offense showed signs of life. Quarterback Connor Simmons (New Palestine, IN / New Palestine) completed 4 of 5 passes and drove the Kats deep into Bulldog territory. After a missed 4th and one conversion, the Kats turned the ball over on downs and the Bulldogs took their 21-0 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the teams would trades scores early on. After the Bulldogs scored a touchdown on a quick four-play drive, the Kats would respond immediately. Charles Fuller (Arlington, VA / Washington Lee) would scamper for a 70-yard run on the first play of the Kats' drive. He would finish the job taking the next hand off five yards for the touchdown.
The Kats offense would move the ball more consistently in the second half but were unable to score after their touchdown. Their defense played well in the second half surrendering only 14 points.
Simmons led the Kats passing as he was 13 of 29 for 123 yards while Fuller was the leading rusher as he ran five times for 89 yards and a touchdown. Mike Wright (Pittsburgh, PA / University Prep) was the leading receiver with four catches for 40 yards.
On defense, the Kats were led by Brandon Cannon (Auburn, AL / Auburn) who finished with nine total tackles along with 2.5 tackles for loss. He also had the only sack of the game for the Kats. In addition, Chauncey Kennedy (Deland, FL / Deland) finished the game with eight total tackles and one interception. Ryan Johnson (Buffalo, NY / West Seneca East) also had eight total tackles for the Kats.
The Kats (1-5) will travel to Alfred, NY next Saturday to play Alfred State University at 1 p.m.
