BUFFALO — Five Erie Community College Culinary Arts students were honored with gold medals at the American Culinary Federation's Northeast Regional Conference Knowledge Bowl, held March 18, 2013 at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York.
Team members (and City Campus students) Chelsea Kwasinewski, Tina Borden, Mariana Stapleton, Andy Muhlbauer and team captain Jessica Walters competed in a Jeopardy-style format against nine other colleges from the Northeast Region. Categories consisted of questions on such topics as culinary math, escoffier, soups, sauce preparations, correct methods of production, exotic fruits and vegetables and recipes. A gold medal indicates that the team scored more than 500 points in its best two matches.
The team was coached by chefs Jacqueline Bamrick and Dorothy Johnston. Also representing ECC was adjunct faculty member Chef Maria Iacovitti, who was a competitor for Regional Pastry Chef of the Year—a prestigious honor in the pastry profession.
