WATERTOWN, N.Y. - Sept. 2 - The Erie Community College volleyball team got 40 kills and 17 digs each from freshmen Katie Russi (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) and Susan Muldoon (Buffalo, N.Y./Mt. Mercy Academy) as the Kats won five matches to take the championship at Saturday's Jefferson Community College Tournament.
ECC defeated Corning Community College, 25-14, 25-9, in its first match of the day before downing Jefferson CC, 26-24, 23-25, and 15-6. ECC closed pool play with a 25-23, 25-9 win over Finger Lakes Community College. In the semifinals, the Kats topped Onondaga Community College, 25-12, 25-23 before recording a 25-22, 25-12 win over Monroe Community College in the championship match.
Sophomore setter Danielle Aurellio-Clark (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) recorded 110 assists on the day to go with 13 service aces.
"I knew we had three big hitters who could put the ball down anywhere on the court and we'd do well serving. We've been trying to use a much quicker offense that allows us to hit quick attacks from all over the court. I think we were successful in confusing some of our opponents and that resulted in a lot of free swings," said ECC head coach Craig Starzynski. "Our serves and hitting were excellent today. I was impressed and very happy with how we played today."
Freshman Rylie Bean (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) added 28 kills to go with 22 digs and seven blocks.
The Kats picked up five service aces in the semifinal win over Onondaga CC and then recorded 10 aces in the championship game win over Monroe CC. Aurellio-Clark had six of the 10 aces against Monroe CC.
ECC will play in a tournament at Niagara County Community College Sept. 10.
