SANBORN, N.Y. - Feb. 5 - Despite a late rally, the ninth-ranked Erie Community College men's basketball team saw its 15-game win streak come to an end Tuesday night as the Kats suffered a 91-88 loss to Niagara County CC in Western New York Athletic Conference play.
Freshman guard Keron Briggs (Buffalo, N.Y./Sweet Home) led the Kats (17-4, 8-1 WNYAC) with 28 points. Sophomore guard Devon Elliott (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) added 22 points and five steals.
ECC trailed 36-18 with 8:56 left in the first half before cutting the margin to six, 44-38, after a dunk by sophomore forward Rayshawn Sumlin (Cleveland, Ohio/Martin Luther King) with 2:08 to play in the half. Sumlin had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Kats. Isaiah Jefferson (Buffalo, N.Y./Riverside) added 12 points.
NCCC opened the second half with an 11-6 run for a 16-point lead, 60-44, with 16:33 remaining. The Kats eventually cut it to the final margin on Elliott's three-point shot at the buzzer.
NCCC (16-6, 7-1 WNYAC) was led by Jordan Street's 23 points and 16 rebounds. NCCC out rebounded the Kats, 54-36.
The Kats will play Jamestown CC-Cattaraugus County at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Flickinger Center.
