BUFFALO, N.Y. - Feb. 11 - Freshman guard Darale Young (Buffalo/Middle College) scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Erie Community College men's basketball team to a 99-89 win over Genesee CC Saturday at the Flickinger Center.
The Kats, now 18-3 overall and 8-1 in Western New York Athletic Conference play, rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit. Genesee CC's Deylon Bovell sank a three-point field goal to give the Cougars a 33-18 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The three-point field goal was the sixth consecutive made three-pointer by Genesee CC.
Young, who scored 18 of his points in the first half, was one of five scorers in double figures for the Kats, the nation's eighth-ranked team. Freshman forward Eyimofee Edukugho (Warri, Nigeria/Our Savior New American School) added 20 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth-double-double of the season. Uche Ogbonna (Westbury, N.Y./Hicksville) added 13 points while Shannon Haynes (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) recorded a career-high 11 points. Dequan Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y./Pacific) scored 10 points.
Young started the Kats' comeback efforts by scoring eight of their next 11 points and assisted on the other basket, a three-pointer by Haynes. Ogbonna hit a three-point field goal from the top of the key with 4:51 left in the half to tie the score at 39. Haynes hit another three-pointer to give ECC a 48-45 lead at 2:40 and the Kats never trailed again.
Genesee CC was led by Bovell's 28 points.
ECC plays at Jamestown Community College Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
