BUFFALO, N.Y. - Feb. 19 - The Erie Community College men's basketball team had five players score 15-or-more points as the Kats recorded a 98-91 win over Mercyhurst North East at the Flickinger Center Tuesday night in Western New York Athletic Conference play.
ECC, ranked 15th in the nation, is now 20-5 overall and 11-2 in league play. The 20 wins marks the ninth time the Kats have won 20-or-more games under head coach Alex Nwora.
Sophomore guard Isaiah Jefferson (Buffalo, N.Y./Riverside) and freshman guard Devon Elliott (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) each scored 21 points. Sophomore forward Rayshawn Sumlin (Cleveland, Ohio/Martin Luther King) recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds while freshman guard Keron Briggs (Buffalo, N.Y./Sweet Home) scored 15 points to go with 10 assists for his third double-double. Freshman forward Tobechuckwu Okafor (Ikesa, Nigeria/Maine Central Institute) added 16 points and three blocked shots.
ECC trailed 37-36 at halftime and then 59-52 with 13:07 left before going on a 13-5 run to take a 65-64 lead on a shot by Okafor with 9:53 left. After the game's seventh tie, ECC went on an 8-0 run for an 88-80 lead on a dunk by Okafor with 2:04 remaining.
The Kats will close the regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday against Genesee CC in Batavia.
