BUFFALO, N.Y. – Feb. 21 – The Erie Community College men’s basketball team, ranked fourth in the nation in Tuesday’s poll, had five players score in double figures as the Kats picked up a 103-90 win over Mercyhurst North East Tuesday night at the Flickinger Center. The win was the 260th for ECC head coach Alex Nwora, who is 260-100 in 13 seasons. He has guided the Kats to five consecutive 20-win seasons.
The Kats, now 21-3 overall and 11-1 in Western New York Athletic Conference play, were led by freshman forward Eyimofee Edukugho (Warri, Nigeria/Our Savior New American School) and his 18 points. Sophomore forward Uche Ogbonna (Westbury, N.Y./Hicksville) added 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double and second in as many games. Freshman guard Darale Young (Buffalo, N.Y./Middle College) added 15 points while sophomore guards Haruna Sule (Kano, Nigeria/Ahmadiyya) netted 11 points and Sam Hattin (Hamilton, Ont./Our Savior) picked up 10 points.
ECC trailed 10-3 just over three minutes into the contest before recording a 16-8 run for a 19-18 lead on a Young three-point field goal with 10:30 remaining in the first half. ECC never trailed again. Young’s three-pointer started three-straight ECC possessions with a three-point field goal.
The Kats will play Niagara County Community College at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Sanborn, N.Y. ECC will hold a Coaches vs. Cancer event at Saturday’s 1 p.m. game against Jamestown Community College-Cattaraugus County.
