CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - (Jan. 29) - Erie Community College goaltender Andrew Yelich (Fredonia) made 40 saves to record ECC's first shutout of the season as the Kats downed the Hudson Valley Community College hockey team 4-0 Saturday at the Cheektowaga Recreation Center Ice Rink. The victory avenged two December losses this season to Hudson Valley CC.
ECC, the nation's fourth-ranked team, improves to 13-5.
Dirk Thur (Clarence Center) gave the Kats a 1-0 just 2:43 into the contest, scoring with a low wrist shot stick-side while on a breakaway. The Kats extended their lead to 2-0 when Frank Briandi (Tonawanda) took a pass from behind the net from Ryan Vertino (Grand Island).
In the second, ECC killed off a 5-3 Hudson Valley power-play opportunity while converting on a power-play opportunity of its own. Todd Lyness (North Tonawanda) put home the cross-ice pass from Nicholas Friol (Orchard Park). Vertino added an assist on the goal.
Lyness would record his second goal of the day on a breakaway at the 5:45 mark of the third period.
ECC will travel to Rochester Wednesday to face Monroe Community College at 7:30 p.m.
