BUFFALO, N.Y. - March 3 - Sophomore forward Alexis Gray (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca East) scored a game-high 18 points and blocked three shots to lead the Erie Community College women's basketball team to a 58-49 win over Alfred State in Sunday's Region III Tournament championship game at the Flickinger Center. ECC, now 21-5, repeats as the Region III Tournament champion, and qualifies for the upcoming NJCAA Division II National Tournament at Illinois Central College in Peoria, Ill., March 19-23.
The 21 wins for ECC are the most since the 1982-83 Kats went 21-7.
ECC used a 7-0 run in the first three minutes of the second half to take a 33-26 lead when sophomore guard Amber Hay (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) scored on a fast break with 17:20 remaining. ECC pushed the lead to 10 points, 41-31, when sophomore guard Cara Weaver (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) sank two free throws with 13:16 left.
Freshman guard Bethany Hall (Muskogee, Okla.) added 13 points, highlighted by making 7 of 8 free throws. Sophomore forward Charmaine Weaver (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) added seven rebounds and six steals.
Haley Witchella led Alfred State with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
