CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – Feb. 6 – Erie Community College’s Nicholas Friol (Orchard Park) scored two goals and added an assist in Sunday’s 10-1 victory over the University of Rochester (ACHA) at the Cheektowaga Recreation Center Ice Rink. ECC, the nation’s third-ranked team, is now 15-5.
Friol opened the scoring for the Kats just 1:26 into the first period on the second deflection from Ryan Vertino (Grand Island) and Mark Kwietniewski (West Seneca). The Kats wasted no time extending the lead to 2-0 by scoring just 63 seconds later, when Michael Boice (Kenmore) put a wrist shot top shelf and past the glove of the Rochester goaltender.
Rochester was unable to score on a power play that was left over from the end of the first period, but did cut the lead to 2-1 just seven seconds after power play ended.
The Kats responded by scoring eight unanswered goals. Goals by Jayson Selbert (Cheektowaga) and John Rabb (Depew) would give the Kats a 4-1 lead before a power-play goal by Dirk Thur (Clarence Center) gave ECC a 5-1 lead. Friol forced the power play when he made a move around a Rochester defensemen to cause a penalty. The Kats finished the second period up 6-1 when Todd Lyness (North Tonawanda) scored with 20 seconds left.
Two goals from Giovanni Venezia (Kenmore) in the third period along with Vertino and Friol each netting one capped the scoring.
Mark Trigilio (Orchard Park) notched three assists, while Anthony Domros (West Seneca) and Steven Milley (Hamburg) each added two assists. Lyness and Selbert each tallied a goal and two assists. Alex Olszewski (West Seneca) got the win in net for the Kats.
The Kats will play Broome Community College Saturday at 3:15 p.m. at the Cheektowaga Recreation Center Ice Rink.
