BUFFALO, N.Y. – March 4 – Led by sophomore guard Dequan Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y./Pacific), the Erie Community College men’s basketball team recorded an 87-62 victory over Mercyhurst North East Sunday afternoon to win the Region III Tournament at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center. The Kats improve to 24-4 overall and have won the past two Region III Tournaments.
Jones scored 26 points to go with nine rebounds and five assists to earn the tournament’s most valuable player honors. He was joined on the all-tournament team by ECC’s Eyimofee Edukugho (Warri, Nigeria/Our Savior New American School), Mercyhurst North East’s Dejuan McGaughy and Geovonte Rose; Monroe Community College’s Andre Armstrong and Genesee Community College’s Deylon Bovell.
Edukugho had 16 points and 14 rebounds for his second-straight double-double in the tournament. McGaughy led the Saints with 20 points while Rose added 13 points and six steals.
ECC sank six three-point field goals in the first half as the Kats opened a 44-29 lead. Sophomore guard Sam Hattin (Hamilton, Ont./Our Savior) had 15 points, including three three-pointers, while Jahmill Jenkins (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) added 11 points and four assists.
ECC advances to the NJCAA Division II Tournament, held March 20-24 in Danville, Ill.
