TYLER, Texas – May 24 – The Erie Community College baseball season came to an end Tuesday with a 3-1 loss to Eastfield (Texas) College at the 2011 NJCAA Division III World Series at Mike Carter Field. Eastfield, the nation’s third-ranked team, advanced to play Manchester (Conn.) Community College later Tuesday.
The Kats, who end the season 30-18, finish fourth at the NJCAA World Series for the third time in five appearances under head coach Joe Bauth. ECC was also fourth in 1998 and 2000.
ECC’s Neal DeMartin (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) and Matt Creenan (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) each recorded two hits.
In the third inning, the Harvesters’ Justin Ray singled and stole second before scoring on a single to right field by Nathan Hancock. In the fifth, Ray reached on an error. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt before moving to third on a wild pitch. Ray scored on a single to center field by Hancock. Hancock had three hits.
Despite opening the inning with back-to-back outs, ECC recorded a run in the seventh. Justin Carpenter (Ottawa, Ont./Franco Cite) reached on an error before Austin Benshadle (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) and DeMartin (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) singled. Dom Benimiano (Geneva, N.Y./Midlakes) entered the game as a pinch-runner for Carpenter and scored on DeMartin’s single. Benshadle and DeMartin moved into scoring position on a passed ball but the next ECC batter was retired.
Eastfield added an insurance run in the ninth inning with a single, walk, a hit batter and a wild pitch.
ECC freshman starting pitcher Brandon Nemeti (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) allowed nine hits and struck out five.
